Chocowinity UMC presents ‘The Dream — The Country — The Flag’

“The Dream — The Country — The Flag” will be presented by Chocowinity United Methodist Church and marks the 20th consecutive year that the church has presented a patriotic musical.

These patriotic programs continue to express foundational truths surrounding the founding of the United States. From the opening song, “God Bless America,” to the finale, “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” the presentation centers upon the freedom and faith concepts, which characterize this nation. Nor can we forget the sacrifices made on her behalf.

Featured are the usual “You’re a Grand Ole Flag” and the “Salute to the Armed Forces” medley. We recognize men and women who have served in the military as they stand with their flag presentations.

We recall somber statements regarding the importance of teaching the children and youth about our nation, including: “Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” Families, churches and civic organizations must supplement social studies lessons taught in the schools. Beaufort County and surrounding areas are rich in sites, which preserve and honor our history.

Slides of American symbols of freedom and scenes depicting the beauty of our landscape keep alive our pride in this land. We still like the phrase, “There’s no place like home.”

One favorite choir song is the continuing theme, “Our Flag Was (Is) Still There.” The newer “We Are Coming Home” is the poignant, sung recognition of appreciation citizens hold in their hearts for those who suffer the loss of life and strength required for the defense of our homeland.

A new musical combination of the lyrics from “This Is My Song,” paired with the tune of “Londonderry Air” expresses this plea: “In peace may all people draw together, and hearts united learn to live as one.”

The program will be presented at Chocowinity United Methodist Church on July 8 at 7 p.m. and July 9 at 3 p.m. Programs are free and open to the public.

Chocowinity UMC is located at 678 N.C. Highway 33 West in Chocowinity.
