Arts of the Pamlico prepares for annual photo exhibit

Arts of the Pamlico’s annual juried photography exhibit is on the horizon, and photographers can submit their entries through Tuesday.
“We’re real excited about this show. Artists can come together to celebrate and advance their work,” said Debra Torrence, executive director of Arts of the Pamlico.
Craig Ramsey, this year’s juror, has been immersed in photography for more than 30 years. He said his photography roots trace back to his high school days when he would take photographs of his friends and nature for leisure.
After owning a commercial photography business in Charlotte for nearly 20 years before relocating to Washington in 2009, this show will be Ramsey’s first time as photography juror.
While it can be a daunting task, he said he’s up for it.
“I wouldn’t say I’m nervous about it, but I want it to be very fair. I’ll turn that energy into excitement,” he said.
Ramsey said he will look for technical photography elements, such as composition and color, but will focus on the overall impact of the photo. He said the photo doesn’t have to be perfect in every aspect, but he wants to get a strong feeling from it.
“It’s not always about being perfect, but the photograph telling a story or raising a question, that makes me look a little bit longer. I’m looking for something that grabs my attention, makes me wonder, makes me think,” Ramsey said.
Torrence said she thinks Ramsey has a lot to offer to the exhibit, including critique that could help local photographers’ work.
“He brings a wealth of education and experience that can help artists advance their work,” Torrence said. “That’s our goal — to give artists the chance to advance and share their work, and reward it.”
The competition is open to the public and submissions will be accepted at AOP’s Turnage Theatre location until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Submissions must be ready to hang and either framed or stretched to fit on canvas. Categories include: digital; documentary/people; landscapes/places; nature/wildlife; mixed media/alternative process and a youth division for children 18 and under.
Cash prizes and awards will be given to the chosen winners at the opening reception, slated for Aug. 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turnage Theatre. While there, visitors can also view two of the finalists competing in “Pick the Winner — Marquee on Main Film Vote Reception,” which is scheduled that night, as well.
Prizes for the photo exhibit include a $250 “best in show” award from AOP, a “best in show” gift from Stewart’s Jewelry and gift cards to ASAP Photo and Camera and more, according to Torrence.
Torrence said the event normally sees around 100 submissions, and she’s expecting the same, if not more, for this year’s show.
“Come and celebrate artists in the community — and be one,” Torrence said.
Submission fee for up to two entries is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Commission is set at 30 percent per sale.
