The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Beaufort County and surrounding areas today through 7 p.m.

Temperatures are expected to peak in the low- to mid-90s today, but heat index values (how hot it feels) will soar to 105-107 degrees.

High index values can lead to heat-related illnesses if residents are not careful. NWS advises residents to stay indoors as much as possible and to drink plenty of fluids. Keep animals indoors as much as possible, as well. Save strenuous, outdoor activities to mornings or early evenings. If residents must be outside, wear loose-fitting clothes and take frequent breaks.

Symptoms of heat stroke:

• High body temperature (103 F or higher)
• Hot, red, dry or damp skin
• Fast, strong pulse
• Headache
• Feeling dizzy
• Nausea
• Feeling confused
• Losing consciousness (passing out)

If experiencing these symptoms, call 911 immediately.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion:

• Heavy sweating
• Cold, pale and clammy skin
• Fast, weak pulse
• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Feeling tired or weak
• Feeling dizzy
• Headache
• Fainting (passing out)
