From the Tyrrell County Genealogical and Historical Society

Hyde Co. Historical and Genealogical Society announces the recent publication of Olde Wickham: Little Kingdom by the Sea, by Richard B. Lupton, a native of Swan Quarter. This comprehensive history of Hyde County, which begins with Sir Walter Raleigh’s colonists and covers history well into the 20th century, gives histories of each of the county’s distinct regions including eastern Beaufort Co. and the Hatteras/ Ocracoke area which were a part of Hyde at one time.

There are chapters devoted to the county’s rich African American and Native American heritage, the Civil War and its effects on Hyde Co., the drainage of Lake Mattamuskeet, and other commercial developments along with discussions of the private and public schools in Hyde’s early years through the 20th century. Various Appendices are included which give a wealth of information supporting the narrative of the twenty-five chapters. The hardbound edition includes a bibliography and is indexed.

The 500 plus page book, published 2017, is available from R.S. Spencer, Inc. (P.O. Box 159, Engelhard, NC 27824) for $50 plus $3.38 NC sales tax and $7 shipping. For more information, email romsandy@ embarqmail.com or phone 252-542-0000.
