Sheriff’s deputies responded to 629 law enforcement calls inside Columbia during May compared with 450 and April and 470 in March, Tyrrell Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported to town aldermen on June 5.
There were 50 ambulance calls and nine fires reported in May versus 24 and 25 ambulance calls and one and two fires in April and March.
In the northwest section of town, as described by Scuppernong Drive and Broad Street, officers conducted one investigation and issued five citations.
In the northeast there were six investigations, four citations issued, and one warrant served for common law robbery and simple assault.
The southwest part of town saw four citations issued.
And in the southeast sector there was one investigation, six citations, one order for arrest served for failure to appear in court, and one on-view arrest for drunk and disruptive.
At the sheriff’s office two orders for arrest were served: for failure to pay child support and for probation violation. Four warrants were served: common law robbery and simple assault, two for possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises, and one for simple assault.
The sheriff also reported that Sgts. Allen and Sawyer received 83 hours general instructor certification at Pitt Community College May 1-12. And Min Cutrell and Paula Oliver received eight hours security awareness training on May 18. Sheriff Liverman commented that his staff now has four certified general instructors and that his next goal is to have a firearms instructor certified.
The two deputies assigned to duty inside Columbia drove 2,088 miles during May.
