BELHAVEN — Fire and EMS personnel responded to a motor vehicle accident around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 264 East and St. Paul Road in Belhaven.

Belhaven and Ponzer volunteer fire departments responded to the scene, as did the N.C. Highway Patrol. About 10 minutes later, dispatchers issued a second call for more assistance. Initial reports said there may be an 18-wheeler involved, but that information could not be confirmed at this time.

An East Care helicopter was requested, according to dispatchers.

There is no word on the conditions of the drivers involved. As of 5:30 p.m., law enforcement was still on the scene.
