Sales and Use Tax Workshop

The N.C. Department of Revenue will discuss the basics of sales and use taxes, including registering for an account, the most common types of sales and use taxes collected, and preparing and filing a tax return. This hands-on workshop is intended to help small business owners understand their sales and use tax obligations and the proper procedure for filing and paying.

Sales and use tax law changes regarding capital improvements and repair, maintenance and installation services will not be addressed in any depth during this seminar. The free workshop will take place Tuesday from 2-4 p.m.

The Experience of a Lifetime: Customer Service That Works

Customers deserve the experience of a lifetime. However, demanding customers, a volatile economy and a wide range of co-workers and managers make providing that experience a challenge. Offering the experience of a lifetime can create quality relationships and a positive work environment in which all members of the organization grow.

In this seminar, Mike Collins will teach students how to provide this great experience, how to learn from difficult people, how to let customers vent, the 11 perceptions people create in the first seven seconds after they meet you and how to read customers. This free seminar will take place Aug. 22 from 2-5 p.m.

Enjoying DSLR Photography

Students will spend four spring evenings learning how to better use their DSLR camera. David Clark, a seasoned commercial photographer, will share his expertise and passion for making great photos. Each evening students will make and share photos with class members as they come to understand how the elements of light interact with the camera. Explore metering, exposure and using various lenses to get desired results. Students will use different modes to photograph people, indoor objects and outdoor scenes. They will learn to format in RAW or JPEG as the need arises. The result will be the best vacation pictures ever. This $50 class will take place on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. starting Sept. 12.

Small Engine Repair

This class is back, and now with just once class per week, it requires less commitment. The college has a new shop with lots of equipment and a new instructor. Now is the time to learn how to fix things or build skills that can result in a job. In this class, students will learn how to diagnose, repair and maintain both two-cycle and four-cycle engines. These include weed eaters, tillers, chain saws, leaf blowers and lawn mowers. Students will receive classroom instruction and hands-on experience. They are encouraged to bring their own equipment for tune-up and repair. This class will take place on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. starting Sept.12. There is a $90 registration fee.

Welding for Fun

This class is a great opportunity for people who have never welded professionally, but want to create metal structures or art around their homes. This class will provide all the materials needed, along with safety equipment. Students will learn the basics of Mig (GMAW), Tig (GTAW) and stick (SMAW) welding. By the end, they will have made their own art project to keep. Accident insurance included in the $130 fee. This class will take place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon starting on Sept. 16.
