Shirley C. Hardison

Mrs. Shirley Carraway Hardison, age 81, a resident of Thoroughfare Road, Washington, went peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2017, at her home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Old Ford Church of Christ, 6040 U.S. Highway 17 North, Washington, conducted by Eddie Bowen and Thomas Hamilton. Burial will follow in the Hardison Family Cemetery, Thoroughfare Road, Washington. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Hardison was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 21, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Willie Jasper Carraway and Mattie Davenport Carraway. Mrs. Hardison supported her husband in the operation of the family farm, held various positions with Beaufort County schools and retired with 22 years of service as secretary of Old Ford Church of Christ. She was a member of the Old Ford Church of Christ, Circle #1, and the Christian Women’s Sunday School class. Mrs. Hardison was actively involved in the Church’s Panorama, Relay for Life team, the American Red Cross Blood Drives, and many other church activities. She was also a member of the Old Ford Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She loved cooking and was well known for her mayonnaise cake. As an avid gardener, she grew many fruits and vegetables and enjoyed sharing them with everyone. Mrs. Hardison was loving wife, mother, and grandmother supporting her family in all of their endeavors.

Survivors include her children, Josh Hardison of Greenville, Jasper (Lisa) Hardison of Washington, Faye (Marty) Ross of Oak City, Jimmy (Jennifer) Hardison of Washington, Polly (David) Singleton of Greenville; brother, Will E. Carraway of Newport News, VA; 11 grandchildren, Joshua Hardison, Mary Elizabeth Hardison, Kimberly DeJong, Christopher Ross, Sarah Hardison Young, Ryan Hardison, Anna Hardison, Nicholas Hardison, Maddie Singleton, Will Singleton, and Mary Helen Singleton, seven great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hardison was married for 53 years to Joshua Hubert Hardison, who preceded her in death in 2008. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hardison was preceded in death by a grandson, Jimmy Carraway Hardison II.

The family would like to thank Community Care Hospice and Home Life Care for their service. Her family is especially thankful for her special caregiver, her son, Josh Hardison. His service allowed her to remain in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Monday, August 21, 2017 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
