Rotary Club creates a “Zone of Relaxation”

The Rotary Club of Pontarlier, France, was concerned that the people in their town’s nursing home and hospital were not getting enough rest. Traffic and noise was so close by it was making their lives “less than relaxing.” So the club raised some $160,000 in order to turn a fallow patch next door into a 5-acre garden. Within the area, they planted 220 small trees and shrubs creating natural zones including an aromatic “zone of relaxation.” Then they made a small forest on the edge to screen the garden and absorb much of the highway noise. Finally, they added wheelchair accessible pathways and park benches to promote fresh air and exercise. One small example of how Rotarians work to make their communities better.
