He graduated from Washington High School and then proceeded to get his degree in Physics from UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 1955. During college at Chapel Hill, Bruce received a NROTC merit scholarship and at graduation, was commissioned in the US Navy. He continued to serve his country for more than 31 years in aviation and Command positions all over the world. He always possessed a desire for knowledge, earning his advanced degrees in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1962 followed by his AE degree from Stanford University. Captain Alligood earned his aviation wings and flew more than two dozen types of aircraft during his career. Many of his favorite and remarkable memories were of flying Navy carrier missions off the USS Oriskany while serving two tours during the Vietnam War. Captain Alligood retired from the Navy in 1984 while serving as Commanding Officer, Navy Jet Propulsion Lab in Trenton, New Jersey. For the past 19 years, following Naval retirement, Bruce made his home in Seven Lakes, NC where he spent time enjoying his lakeside home, boating and doing woodwork, and playing lots of golf and tennis. Many of his fondest memories were spending time with his 8 grandchildren.

Capt. Alligood was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Joyce Edwards Alligood in 1997 and a brother Harold, of Huntersville NC, in 2010.

He is survived by three sons, Bruce Tyndall Alligood III and wife, Cindy, of King, NC, Dr. David Blair Alligood and wife, Bobi, of Roanoke VA, and Jeffrey Edwards Alligood and wife, Dana, of La Jolla, CA. He adored his eight grandchildren, Brian and Meg Alligood, Luke, Timothy, and Ian Alligood, and Spencer, Zachary, and Samuel Alligood. Capt. Alligood is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Alligood (Suzanne) of Wake Forest, NC, and James (Jim) Alligood (Barbara) of St. Augustine, Fl., and a sister, Marie von Seekamm of Littleton, Co.

Before her death, Margaret Joyce charged her sister, Nancy Jean Edwards Bienes (Jerry) with looking after Bruce over these past 20 years. Margaret could not have asked for a more caring and loving person to handle this task than Nancy. Ms. Allyene Boyette, of Charleston, was a very special friend and companion to Bruce for more than 17 years, during which they traveled and enjoyed many cities and countries all over the world. Bruce also leaves many friends, neighbors, golf buddies, and acquaintances in the Beacon Ridge community of West End, whom he met during the last years of his lifetime.
