The Tyrrell County Board of Education met Aug. 7 in regular session.
The board heard an update on professional development activities and approved the 2017-2018 Title I Plan.
The board also reviewed data on combining the Kilkenny and Gum Neck bus routes for the coming school year.
The superintendent informed the board of upcoming events on our campuses including the opening breakfast Aug. 21 with guest speaker Sen. Erica Smith-Ingram, open house on all campuses Aug. 24, the first day for students Aug. 28, and the scheduled visit of the new president of Beaufort County Community College on Sept. 6.
The Board of Education also met in a special called session Aug. 9 to approve personnel and meet with the board attorney.
At its meeting on July 17, the board elected Lee Scripture to a one-year term as chairman and Carlos Armstrong as vice chairman. Scripture succeeds Robin Dunbar; Armstrong retained his office from the previous year.
The Gum Neck and Kilkenny bus routes will be combined for the upcoming school year “as a way to increase efficiency in the TCS transportation department,” Dr. Will Hoffman, superintendent, explained.
Last year the Kilkenny route averaged 116 miles per day and the Gum Neck route averaged 73 miles per day.
“By combining the routes this year, Bus 108 will average 73 miles per day with an average of 16 bus riders per day,” Hoffman stated. “While the transportation department already has an efficiency rating of 97 percent, this move will help TCS save money on personnel, fuel and maintenance costs.”
