Lady Pack edges North Lenoir

Washington and North Lenoir were evenly matched in Tuesday’s 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference matchup. The Lady Pack won the fourth and fifth sets to earn the 3-2 win, marking their second conference victory in as many tries.

The Lady Hawks took the first set. Washington bounced back with a win in the second, but North Lenoir backed it into a corner with a third-set win to push the lead to 2-1.

The game was the first of three in three days. Washington hosted Northside in non-conference action on Wednesday before welcoming in league opponent Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.

Washington can’t come back at South Central

WINTERVILLE — It’s been a long time since Washington soccer has had a losing record. After opening the season with a draw to former conference rival North Pitt, the Pam Pack got in the win column with a 2-0 shutout of South Central.

The Falcons avenged the loss with a 3-2 win on their home field. They scored three times in the first half. Washington found twine twice in the second, but South Central staved off the comeback attempt as the Pam Pack lost for the second time in its first four games.

Greene Central snaps Lady Pack’s win streak

SNOW HILL — Washington’s girls’ tennis team had strung together four wins in a row. The streak came to an end in the Lady Pack’s 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener at perennial powerhouse Greene Central.

The Lady Rams earned a sweep, 9-0. Top singles competitors Claire Shepherd and Kayla Clark played close sets in defeat. The doubles squad of Abbi Tucker and Bailey Gerard, the No. 3 tandem, had the closest outing.

Southside drops fourth in a row

BAYBORO — The Lady Seahawks flew past Columbia, 3-0, in its season opener on Aug. 15. Troubles have piled on since then, though, as Southside has lost four in a row. Its most recent was Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at Pamlico County in its 1-A Coastal Plains Conference opener.

Southside’s slate doesn’t get any easier. It travels to Jones Senior on Thursday before returning home to Chocowinity for home matches with two tough customers in Riverside and Northside next week.

Jaguars get one back against Seahawks

FARMVILLE — Southside narrowly beat Farmville Central at home last week. This time in Farmville, the Jaguars were the ones to pick up the close win, 3-2.

The Seahawks conceded two goals in the first half. Down 2-0 coming out of the intermission, they stormed back with a pair of goals in the second half, but the Jaguars were able to net the winning goal.

The loss marked the beginning of a four-game road tilt. Southside next travels to South Lenoir on Thursday. The Seahawks won’t play at home again until they host Southwest Edgecombe on Sept. 18.
