Ella Oden, a longtime resident of Washington, died last night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing West 15th Street.

The accident happened at 9:24 p.m., near the intersection of Bridge and 15th streets.

“She was crossing the street at night and pushing a shopping cart in the dark and got struck by a vehicle and didn’t make it,” said Capt. William Chrismon, spokesman for Washington Police Department.

Oden, 68, was a resident of Holly Glen Drive, but could often be found walking down Washington streets, singing southern gospel or praying for passers by. She was a regular visitor to many local businesses and churches.

“We hate it. She’s an icon. Everybody knows Miss Ella. She came in here many a day,” Chrismon said.

The investigation into Oden’s death, held in conjunction with North Carolina State Highway Patrol, is ongoing, though it appears to be strictly an accident, according to officials.

“As of right now, no one will be charged,” Chrismon said.
