Medicare Part D enrollment opens Oct. 15

The enrollment period for Medicare Part D is fast approaching, as it runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Medicare Part D is related to prescription drug coverage. The open enrollment period is geared toward those looking to enroll for 2018, and also those already enrolled.

“We do encourage individuals that are enrolled to compare the plans for the upcoming year,” said Brandie Garner, aging services coordinator at the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging. “They will be receiving an annual notice of benefits for their plan.”

Garner said a person already enrolled should take a second look for two main reasons: cost savings and changes in coverage. Drug plans often change premium amounts, as well as the list of medications covered and/or subsidized, she said.

“Comparing Part D plans annually is imperative to insuring that the Medicare beneficiary has the best coverage for their prescription needs,” state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey stated in a press release.

Medicare Part D clients have a few choices for changing or enrolling for plans:

  • Visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan
  • Contact the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging at 252-974-1854
  • Contact Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center at 252-975-9637
  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

“A lot of times, when we find an individual that, you know, is confused by the information, we do encourage them to meet with someone local,” said Garner, who works one-on-one with clients if they need it. “Offering that service and guidance oftentimes will help sort of answer their lingering questions and unravel some of the confusion.”

Garner said it doesn’t matter when changes to a Part D plan are made — as long as it’s completed by Dec. 7. Some people may qualify for a special enrollment period, but the vast majority should adhere to the time frame set in place.

Any changes regarding Medicare Part D will become effective as of Jan. 1, 2018.
