SWAN QUARTER — Hyde County authorities responded to a call for shots fired at a residence on Swindell Forest Road in Swan Quarter at approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Two deputies with the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, and other law enforcement officers were later called in the early morning hours of Wednesday to help investigate.

One male suspect, who authorities declined to identify at this time, shot at a patrol car and into his own occupied residence on Swindell Forest Road, according to Hyde County Sheriff Guire Cahoon. No one was injured.

Cahoon said authorities removed a shotgun, rifle, pistol and other weapons from the residence.

According to Cahoon, a neighbor offered assistance to calm the suspect and convince him to surrender to authorities.

The suspect is being held at Central Prison in Raleigh and has a court appearance scheduled for Oct. 26 in Hyde County. His only prior offenses were law citations, Cahoon said.

Cahoon declined to comment on the situation leading up to the shooting, and he said the investigation is still ongoing.

“We’ve been up all night, and we’ve still got stuff going on,” Cahoon said.
