Grading Out: Standouts lead Washington, Southside to Week 9 wins

Washington and Southside needed wins in Week 9. They both won in convincing fashion thanks to stellar team efforts highlighted by exceptional individual performances.
The Pam Pack went out to South Lenoir and churned out one of its best offensive showings since the turn of the century. It ran up nearly 600 yards of offense and scored 67 points on the Blue Devils.
Southside’s defense did well against a bevy of talented Riverside athletes. The Seahawks’ offense struck twice early on and kept the Knights at arm’s reach.
Here are the standouts from Week 9:
HYKEEM RUFFIN, WASHINGTON
Hykeem Ruffin has had as stellar a season as anyone in Beaufort County. The Pam Pack running back has been a consistent threat even as the team changed up its offense mid-season.
All his single-game performances — which include multiple four-touchdown games — pale in comparison to what he did at South Lenoir. He rumbled for 301 yards rushing, accounting for over half of the team’s production, and five touchdowns. His night highlighted one of the best offensive showings Washington has had since the turn of the century.
TRAJAN RHOME, SOUTHSIDE
Trajan Rhome’s game could have gone terribly after he fumbled the ball away twice in the first half. The Southside senior was getting back into the swing of things after being held from physical contact during practice the week leading up to the clash with Riverside.
He rebounded nicely after halftime. Rhome rushed for a game-best 125 yards. He capped off a long drive to open the second half with a 2-yard touchdown that gave the Seahawks a 24-6 lead.
JA’QUEZ RUFFIN, WASHINGTON
Washington’s offense couldn’t operate on Hykeem Ruffin alone. He needed a complement, and with Ka’ci Foreman battling injuries, Ja’quez Ruffin stepped right up. The dynamic athlete has been steadily getting more involved in the offense over the past weeks.
This week, Ruffin had one of the Pam Pack’s more explosive plays when he tore through South Lenoir’s defense for a 73-yard touchdown with 2:24 left before halftime. He had three more carries for 11 yards.
BRANDON SULLIVAN, SOUTHSIDE
Southside’s powerhouse made his presence felt quickly on Friday. After the defense made short work of Riverside’s game-opening drive, the senior fullback punched in a 1-yard touchdown to put the Seahawks on the board less than three minutes in.
Sullivan found pay dirt again from a yard out not even four minutes later. It gave Southside a fast two-score lead over the Knights. Defensively, Sullivan had seven tackles (two solo). Riverside managed 265 yards of total offense, but struggled to score when in position.
DEMETRIUS EBRON, SOUTHSIDE
Demetrius Ebron made plays all over the field on Friday. It started with Southside’s first offensive play. Usually a pass catcher, Ebron ripped off a 70-yard run to set the table for Sullivan’s game-opening touchdown.
He finished with four tackles (two solo) on defense. He and fellow senior defensive backs Cody Modlin and Grant Jensen were tasked with locking down a talented Riverside receiving corps that featured East Carolina commit Jadakis Bonds. Ebron laid a hit on Bonds at the goal line that forced a fumble. He also had an interception that was called back due to a penalty.
