The Down East Seniors Club held its Oct. 25 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Stewart Rumley led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America,” and Charles Smith gave the invocation. Ed Hamrick read factoids for the date in history and Dick Paul provided humor.
Program Chairman Gary Brinn introduced Carnie Hedgepeth, director of Beaufort County Emergency Services. Hedgepeth has done similar work at the state level and with Greenville. He has been in the current position six months. BCES includes Emergency Medical Services, County Fire Marshal, Emergency Management and Animal Control. EMS employs 32 full-time and 15 part-time people and provides paramedic-level services. EMS trucks are located in Bath, Belhaven, Old Ford and Blounts Creek. There are many volunteers that work with the different areas of BCES. Hedgepeth said he feels his greatest accomplishment so far has been to get people in the different areas to talk to each other, to work together and to share jobs when needed.
Ed Bolen won the 50/50 drawing.
