BELHAVEN — Residents in the Sidney fire district might see a reduction in homeowners’ insurance rates in the coming months.

Sidney Volunteer Fire Department improved its rating from 9S to 6 within 5 miles of the station, and from 10 to 9E in the area between 5 and 6 miles from the station, according to a SVFD press release.

North Carolina’s Response Rating System gives ratings based on a variety of factors, including the number of employees, the equipment available, water handling, communication systems in operation and training hours, among many others. Ratings range from class one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as certified).

Most rural stations receive 9S ratings, according to the N.C. Department of Insurance.

“While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district,” a NCDOI press release states.

According to NCDOI, higher ratings, such as those Sidney VFD received, can lower homeowners’ insurance rates in that particular district. That’s why Sidney VFD is hoping the residents in its district will see improvements in their rates.

“The citizens … should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency,” Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey stated in the release.

Sidney VFD has strived to upgrade its rating for years, according to Fire Chief Bill Leighty, and the station’s success was made possible by collaboration with other emergency services organizations from the county, Bath and Belhaven.

“SVFD has always strived to meet the highest standards possible in protecting the property and safety of our fire district and will continue to do so,” Leighty said.

Sidney’s new rating will become effective in February 2018. Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance agents regarding the changes.
