GREENVILLE — The student who passed away in a residence hall on East Carolina University’s campus Wednesday has been identified as Simmie Byrd of Raleigh.

Byrd was a freshman majoring in biology with a leadership minor.

At approximately 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Byrd was discovered unresponsive by her roommate in their room in Jarvis Residence Hall.

ECU police continue to investigate the cause of death, but there is no evidence at this time to suggest foul play.
