Washington High School’s Math I end-of-course, value-added growth measure indicates a promising trend from the 2013-2014 school year. While all students are allowed to take Math I in the eighth grade, upon meeting strict academic requirements, the majority of students enrolled at Washington High School take Math I as a freshman course. Under the state of North Carolina’s Education Value-Added Assessment System, Washington High has trended from a -2.4-growth measure in 2014, to a -1.5-growth measure in 2016, indicating a significant improvement. The overall Math I grade-level proficiency percentage has also increased almost 10 percentage points from the 2015-2016 school year to the 2016-2017 school year.

The math department and administration attribute the positive results to several key factors: the positive support of the school community and parents; increased collaboration among the math department teachers; improved student engagement with the implementation of more technology; and a lot of prayer. The department is focused on continuing the growth trend in student learning and striving to reach every student, in every class, every day, ensuring each student is ready for college, ready for a career and ready for life.
