The 10U Belhaven Bulldogs had been undefeated entering Saturday’s Super Bowl game. The Washington Colts endured an early jab and scored three unanswered touchdowns, ending Belhaven’s bid at a perfect season and capturing the 10U title.
The top-ranked Bulldogs delivered a quick blow to open the game. Famous Wilson ran the kickoff down to the Colts’ 5-yard line. German Villa scampered in on the first play from scrimmage, giving Belhaven an 8-0 lead early after Ethan and Famous Wilson linked up for the 2-point conversion.
It looked like Belhaven would double down after limiting Washington’s first drive to four plays. The Colts got the ball back by the end of the first quarter when Keane Gorham jumped on a fumble. Penalties against Belhaven helped move them down the field. The Bulldogs were whistled for a facemask and then jumped offside on fourth-and-3.
Korbyn Arnold, right after getting a new set of downs, broke tackles to score a 5-yard touchdown. Kisiah Booth ran in the conversion, knotting the game at 8-8 with 5:58 left in the half.
Washington’s defense made short work of the Bulldogs’ ensuing possession. Arnold and T.J. Burrus blew through the offensive line for a loss of five yards, helping to force a turnover on downs.
It only took two plays for Booth to explode down the right sideline for a 35-yard go-ahead touchdown. Two false starts made Josiah Jennette’s 2-point conversion nearly as long as Booth’s long score.
Belhaven, with only 2:31 left before halftime, nearly responded when Ethan Wilson ran 31 yards to put the Bulldogs inside the Colts’ 10. Washington made the stop, though.
The opposing defenses neutralized one another in the third quarter. Washington only went backwards before going three-and-out and punting the ball away. Belhaven also struggled to move the ball as Jennette’s tackle for loss brought up a fourth-and-11 and then turnover on downs.
The Colts added insurance just over a minute into the fourth quarter. Arnold erupted down the left sideline for a 60-yard touchdown that extended Washington’s lead to 22-8 with 6:51 to play.
The Bulldogs got two more shots to close the gap. Tristan Everson had an interception with about three minutes to go, but the Washington defense kept them from getting much forward progression.
