Bank offers prizes in exchange for rocks

First Bank is getting into the holiday spirit with gifts to those who are on the lookout.

In the style of “happy rocks”—rocks painted with uplifting messages or images and hidden in public places for strangers to find—and in the same vein as Pokemon, in which there is a reward, First Bank has hidden special rocks around Beaufort County. Those who find and return them to the bank will receive a prize.

It’s just a fun way for the bank employees to celebrate the holidays, said Senior Vice President and Area Executive William Taylor.

“I think the goal is to just create some excitement at a time of the year that’s already exciting and just add to that,” Taylor said.

The idea came from branch manager and Assistant Vice President Melissa Jarvis, who spent the weekend hiding the rocks in public spaces, such as in parks and ballparks. Jarvis said she wanted to do something similar to First Bank’s corporate “Dream It. Do It.” campaign, but on a smaller scale.

“(It’s) kind of playing on the same idea — just to give the local people some excitement, and earn a prize,” Jarvis said. “There’s so many people that I hear about that enjoy hunting these types of rocks — it’ll just generate some excitement throughout the community.”

Jarvis said the rocks are clearly marked with First Bank, and two silver-painted rocks will net finders a $50 gift card when returned.

Taylor said people should be on the lookout when they’re out and about.

“You need to always pay attention, you need to keep your eyes open because you never know what you might come across,” Taylor said. “Good things show up in unexpected places.”
