Lady Raiders win tournament title

MERRY HILL — Pungo’s basketball teams wrapped up tournament play at Lawrence Academy over the weekend. The Lady Raiders’ varsity team brought home a title in a thrilling 46-41 overtime win over Ridgecroft. The other three finished as runners up.

Emily Spencer and Lauren Kellie Ricks each scored nine points in the win. Emma Allen added eight. Ashley Spencer had seven, Riley Cutler had six, Rebecca Hodges had five and Brinson Edmundson had two.

Spencer was named tournament MVP. Cutler and Ricks were also honored in being named to the all-tournament team.

Josie Hudnell had 10 points in a 32-22 loss for the junior-varsity girls. Emma Williams and Jenny Harris added four apiece. Morgan Burroughs and Haley Elliot had two each.

Miller Lee’s 17 points wouldn’t be enough for the JV boys, which were edged, 49-48, in their championship game. Devin Cadle (13) and Wilson Sawyer (11) each scored in double digits, too.

Ridgecroft scooted by the Raiders, 57-51, in the varsity boys’ championship game. Ryan Bishop led the team with 15 points. Cameron Howell added 13. Ben Sawyer and Nate VanStaalduinen each had six. Chandler Cuthrell scored five. Brent Benson, Miller O’Neal and Albert Ruiz finished with two each.

Howell, Biship and Simmons were all named to the all-tournament team. Pungo hosts Albermarle School on Tuesday and Hobgood Academy on Friday.
