The Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office arrested Matthew D. Winger, 30, of Columbia on December 3 and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported.

The arrests are the result of an investigation into the shooting of Amanda Winger, the wife of the defendant, on Saturday, November 25.

Deputies responded to a call of a shooting at their residence in Gum Neck and found Amanda Winger, 26, suffering from a single gunshot wound from a 9-mm. handgun. Deputies also found marijuana and drug paraphernalia at the residence.

The victim returned home December 2 from Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where she had been airflifted and had undergone abdominal surgery.

The defendant was placed in the Dare County Detention Center without bond. He was scheduled for a first appearance in Tyrrell County District Court on December 5.
