Lady Pack takes conference opener
SNOW HILL — Washington opened 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference play Tuesday with a 49-26 win at Greene Central. The Lady Pack jumped out to a 32-13 lead by halftime and cruised from there.
The win, Washington’s fourth of the season, snaps a two-game skid and gives it a 1-0 start in league play. The Lady Pack ended a stretch of three games in three days when it hosted North Lenoir on Wednesday.
Washington will be home again when it hosts Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday. It will then take a break from ECC play when it participates in South Central’s Christmas Tournament.
Lady Seahawks suffer first loss
BAYBORO — Southside was handed its first loss of the season in a 53-8 clobbering at the hands of state-championship runner-up Pamlico County. Junior Zion Davis’ double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds) led the Lady Hurricanes.
Jainaya Jones topped all scorers with 16 points. Symone Ruffin led the Lady Seahawks with six points. As a team, they went 0-for-10 at the free-throw line.
Southside scored six of its eight points in the first quarter and finished the first eight minutes only down 8-6. Pamlico County’s offense came uncorked after that as it erupted for 18 points in each of the next two periods.
The Lady Canes’ defense was suffocating throughout most of the game. They outrebounded Southside, 39-17, to produce extra opportunities. They also forced a season-high 20 turnovers from their visitors.
Southside will travel to Columbia on Thursday and then to Jones Senior on Friday. The mission will be to bounce back and finish the week with wins in 2-of-3 games.
Southside swept away by Hurricanes
BAYBORO — George Jones (16), Malik Barber (11) and Sincere Gibbs (11) all scored in double figures as Pamlico County breezed past Southside, 71-40, on Tuesday. Demetrius Ebron’s 14 points wouldn’t be enough for the Seahawks to keep pace.
Southside suffered from a slow start and a poor showing late in the game. The hosting Hurricanes outscored the Seahawks, 15-6, in the first quarter. Southside’s shooters settled in to score 20 in the second, which resulted in a 36-26 halftime deficit.
That second-period showing would be all Southside could produce. It scored just 14 points in the second half. Pamlico County, meanwhile, never took its foot off the gas as it pulled away in the final 16 minutes.
Sophomores Ivory Moore and Zack Green combined for 14 points in the loss. Brandon Sullivan and Jaleel Coffey each had four.
Next up for the Seahawks is a back-to-back that will have them travel to Columbia and Jones Senior to end the week.
Washington blasted in ECC debut
SNOW HILL — Washington, new to the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference, faced a lofty challenge in its league debut. The Pam Pack traveled to ECC favorite Greene Central. Despite competing in the first half, it was dealt a 72-30 defeat.
The Pam Pack falls to 0-9 on the season. It hosted conference foe North Lenoir on Wednesday.
Washington only trailed 26-14 at halftime. The Rams then exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to run away with the game.
The Pam Pack, after hosting the Hawks, look forward to competing in Northside’s Holiday Tournament. It has a meeting with Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday sandwiched between tournament games on Monday and Wednesday.
