ROBERT L. MITCHELL of Columbia answered phone calls from well-wishers on January 2, his 101st birthday. Mitchell was in his barber shop on Main Street as usual, where he has been since 1937 except for U.S. Navy service in the Pacific during World War II. Tyrrell County’s most senior citizen attributes his longevity to “the Good Lord; he’s blessed me over and over again.”
