Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Jones Sawyer, age 93, a resident of Honey Pod Farm Road, Washington, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at her home.

A graveside service will be held 2 PM Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Rev. Ken Hall and Bryan Kempton.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Timothy Carl Shaffer, Jeffery Brian Thompson, Collin Brice Heiler, Marvin Alfred “Mat” Tanner III, Tyler Mark Copley, Grover Harold Sawyer and Phillip Rodney Sawyer.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Pitt county on Oct. 3, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Guy Jones and Myrtle Jones. Mrs. Sawyer graduated from Washington High School in 1942 and later attended State College. On July 26, 1943, she married Hilton Earl Sawyer, who preceded her in death, March 28, 2006.

Mrs. Sawyer was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1950. Mrs. Sawyer was an active member of the United Methodist Women, served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Circle of Faith. In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her yard and feeding the wildlife. Mrs. Sawyer loved the ocean, swimming, singing and dancing. Just like her husband, she was an avid Duke fan.

Mrs. Sawyer is survived by two daughters, Patricia Sawyer “Tish” Moore and her husband, James Brice “Mike” Moore III of Washington, Sheila Sawyer Tanner and her husband, Marvin Alfred “Fritz” Tanner, Jr. of Washington; five grandchildren, Gretchen Moore Shaffer (Tim), Gwyneth Moore Thompson (Jeff), Marvin Alfred “Mat” Tanner III (Amanda), Elizabeth Alston Tanner, Ann Hunt Copley (Tyler); and five great grandchildren, Collin, Sadie, Grant Hilton, Sawyer, and Sloan.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Elizabeth Sawyer, and a brother, Ivan L. Willard.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son in law, Tish and Mike Moore, 78 Shady Banks Beach Road, Washington, and following the service at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 304 W. Second St., Washington, N.C. 27889, or the Beaufort County Humane Society, P.O. Box 33, Washington, N.C. 27889.

The family would like to extend “A Special Thank You” to Mrs. Sawyer’s Golden Way Care Givers, Estelle Beavers and Blanche Samuels.
