From the Ponzer Ruritan Club

The Ponzer Ruritan Club, located eight miles east of Belhaven, on U.S. Highway 264, recently presented a plaque to the Acre Station Meat Farm for the generous support/assistance with the club’s yearly major fundraising event: the annual homemade whole hog sausage project.

Club members utilize numerous fundraising events during the year to assist local community needs and events, some of which include losses from home fires, medical bills incurred creating difficulty in payment and additional unmet needs, such as payment for utility bills.

One of the largest activities is the awarding of scholarships to students who are graduating from high school or are continuing current specific educational goals (at Beaufort County or Pitt community colleges and other state or private college programs). Schools—public and private, as well as those who are home-schooled—in Hyde and eastern Beaufort counties are provided with information packets in early spring. Ruritan Educational Committee members work with school principals, counselors, teachers and others to review each applicant’s submission. Based not only on achievement, the committee also reviews each student’s involvement in activities in various school programs and participation in local and regional projects, i.e. clean-up after storms, fires, floods and other actions involving themselves in helping to meet other community needs. The amount of scholarships for 2016-17 totaled $3,500.

Sales this year began November 2017 and continue January through March 2018. Please note that all sausage sales must be pre-ordered. You are encouraged to contact the club by March 3 for pickup March 17. You may do so by calling Bud and/or Cathy Clayton at 252-943-3123 or any other club member.
