DECOY DAY: The East Carolina Wildfowl Guild partnered with the North Carolina Estuarium to offer a free children’s decoy-painting event during the East Carolina Wildlife Arts Festival on Feb. 10. Two sessions, one at 9:30 a.m. and another at 11 a.m., allowed 63 children between the ages of 5 and 12 to participate. The kids were led through painting a Wood Duck Drake decoy by John Elliott, a charter member of the East Carolina Wildfowl Guild. According to Jay Sullivan, member of the East Carolina Wildfowl Guild and event volunteer, “This is just one of many outreach events that the East Carolina Wildfowl Guild sponsors to promote the heritage of decoy carving and painting that is such an integral part of waterfowl history in eastern North Carolina.” Eleven members of the guild, along with Russ Chesson with the Estuarium, helped ensure the event was a success and that fun was had by all.
