Pickin’ on the Pamlico

SCAVENGER HUNT: Bath resident Louis Gurganus shows off several old bottles he found off of Havens Gardens in Washington on Friday. The Pamlico River was measured at more than four feet below its average water level in Washington on Friday, due to gale- or storm-force winds blowing out of the west all day. Much of the river bottom was exposed, allowing treasure-seekers to search the bottom for such finds as these old bottles. In the second photo, Gurganus displays a bottle embossed with “Washington, N.C.,” which he believes to be an old Orange Crush bottle. (Vail Stewart Rumley/Daily News)
