The Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society, based in Engelhard, plans to hold its spring meeting May 20 at the historic Fairfield United Methodist Church in Fairfield.
The meeting begins at 2:30 p.m. Alex Christopher Meekins, an archivist with Archives and History in Raleigh, a division of the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, will be the keynote speaker. Meekins is the author of “Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and the Civil War: A History of Battle and Occupation.”
Copies of the society’s spring journal, “High Tides,” which focuses this time on the Fairfield area, will be available at the meeting. Anyone interested in the history of Hyde County is encouraged to attend. For more information, see the Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society’s Facebook page.
The Hyde County Historical Society was formed in 1963. In 1991, the name of the society was changed to Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization formed to preserve and record the history of Hyde County and its people.
