These Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) were seen near the north end of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. They normally wade in water looking for food, and dive or swim only when threatened. Some favorite foods are fish, brine shrimp, tadpoles & beetles. Balancing on their very long red legs, the Black-necked Stilt is an entertaining bird to watch.
