PLYMOUTH — Dalton Leonard Finch, Jr., also known to family and friends as “D.L.”, passed away on May 12, 2018 at the age of ninety-one.
Born March 4, 1927 in Halifax County he was the son of the late Dalton L. Finch, Sr. and Mary Hardison Finch. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Stanley Finch; sisters, Louis Deloatch, Sylvia Harris and Mary Hale.
A native of Roanoke Rapids, Dalton joined the Air Force at the age of nineteen. He journeyed many places in this world and settled in Atlanta, Georgia briefly where he attended Atlantic Christian College for two years. He them moved to Elizabethton, TN. where he attended Milligan College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then moved to Indianapolis, IN. and attended Barton College. During his time in Indiana God called him to preach the gospel at the age of twenty-five. After two years he finally settled in Plymouth, N.C. and attended East Carolina University where he earned his Master of Arts in Educations.
Dalton was retired from Washington County School System. His various roles included educator, testing administrator and guidance counselor. He was a leader and advocate for education. He served as a minister for over fifty years at Gospel Light Church of Christ and Long Acre Chapel Christian Church. He was a member of Gospel Light Church of Christ.
His family includes his beautiful wife of sixty-eight years, Jacqueline S. Finch of Plymouth, N.C.; daughter, Kathy E. Davenport and husband Tim of Plymouth, N.C.; grandson, Daryl Davenport and wife Kathi; granddaughter, Heather Davenport Small and husband William of Greenville, N.C. and six great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Gospel Light Church of Christ with Jim Cooper and Olin Midgett officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Garden. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Gospel Light Church of Christ and other times at the residence.
