When it comes to creating a safe space for survivors of domestic violence, the needs of a shelter are much like those of any household. From cleaning supplies to gift cards for food and gas, it takes donations to help Ruth’s House assist families looking for an escape from abuse.
“When people ask what we need, I always tell them to think about what they need at their house and then multiply it by 10,” Ruth’s House Executive Director Valerie Kines said. “We have so much in and out between staff and clients. Toilet paper, dish washing detergent, laundry detergent; all that stuff we take for granted that we have to buy for our house, we have to buy it for the shelter as well.”
Each month, the shelter releases a list of needs to the community. From items to sustain the adults and children temporarily housed at the shelter to things that will help these families as they move into new homes, each donation can make a difference.
Items needed at the shelter include basic household items such as bleach, dish detergent, cleaning supplies, hand soaps and sanitizers, sponges, disinfectant spray and wipes, paper products, solo cups, trash bags, Swiffer pads and refills and ziplock bags.
For those housed at the shelter, personal items are needed such as bug spray, coloring books and crayons, diapers, feminine products, gift cards for clothing and gas, manicure sets and nail clippers, sippy cups, thermometers and baby wipes.
Donations can be dropped off at Ruth’s House Antique Shop at 228 West Main Street in Washington. Donations of antiques, furniture and collectables can also be made at the shop, with proceeds from the store directly benefiting the shelter.
For those who want to avoid the hassle of shopping, donations of items can be purchased online at www.domesticshelters.org/nc/washington/27889/ruth-s-house-inc/wish-list. Shipping is free for orders more than $50.

Thus far in 2018, Ruth’s House has provided services to 94 individuals in the community. In the recent weeks, the organization has helped two mothers and their children relocate to their own apartments.
