Columbia aldermen approve permit fee increase

The Columbia Board of Aldermen recently raised building permit fees an average of 7-8%.

The new schedule includes:

  • Camper $50
  • Single-wide $190
  • Double-wide $220
  • Triple-wide $235
  • Utility or storage building, private garage: up to 200 square feet $45, 201-600 sq. ft. $75, 601+ sq. ft. $75 plus 10 cents per square foot.
  • Additions up to 400 sq. ft. $65; over 400 $100.
  • New residential construction up to 20,000 sq. ft. 20 cents per square foot; over 20,000 15 cents per square foot.
  • New commercial construction: up to 20,000 sq. ft. 25 cents per square foot; over 20,000 20 cents per sq. ft.
  • Alterations, repairs, greenhouses, etc.: valuation under $5,000 including labor, no fee except as required by state law. Valuation over $5000, fee is $5 per $1,000 or fraction (minimum $45).
  • Swimming pool: in-ground $150, above ground $75.
  • Electrical permits: new construction 15 cents sq. ft., alterations $55, temporary service pole $35, restoration of electrical service $45.
  • Mechanical permits: new construction 15 cents sq. ft., additional units $35 each, alterations $45, natural gas $45.
  • Dual fuel permit: $75.
  • Insulation: new 10 cents sq. ft., alterations $45.
  • Sign permit: up to 96 sq. ft. $45, electricity for sign $45.
  • Plumbing: new 15 cents sq. ft., alterations $45.
  • Change of occupancy inspection: $50.
  • Re-inspection: $50.
  • Demolition $75.
  • Decks, ramps, piers $50
  • Communication towers: $100 plus $5 per vertical foot.
  • Moving permit: minimum new construction rate.
  • Safety inspections: one yearly no charge; additional $50.
  • Homeowners Recovery Fund: $10.

The new schedule was adopted unanimously on motion by Alderman Bryan Owens.
