If you’ve been thinking about adding a kitten or two to the family circle, Saturday may be “Decision Day.”
Washington’s Tractor Supply store, at 608 W. 15th St., will host an adoption event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring feline babies from ENC Shelter Cats. The event includes a raffle for Tractor Supply prizes with pet or farm themes. A donation of cat food or litter earns the donor a chance at the prize of his or her choice.
ENC Shelter Cats, a volunteer group that maintains a Facebook page promoting adoption and rescue of cats and kittens in the Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility in Washington, will bring six kittens for visitors to play with and cuddle. They will be housed in a large walk-in kennel where potential adopters may interact with them.
If a family falls in love with a kitten they meet at the event, volunteers will walk them through the adoption procedure. Kittens will have their first shots, worming, one month’s-worth of flea prevention, a “combo” test for FIV and Feline Leukemia and mandatory spay or neuter when each goes to its new home. The cost of these medications and procedures is included in the adoption fee.
A new local animal advocacy group supporting local rescues, String of Pearls, will raise funds at the event for rescue-cat medical expenses. Visitors may donate money, food, and/or buy handmade items at the String of Pearls table. All proceeds benefit homeless cats and kittens. String of Pearls also recruits cat and dog rescue volunteers, advocates for shelter reform that will result in no euthanization for adoptable animals and plans special projects to promote animal stewardship in Beaufort County.
