The county commissioners on August 7 appointed Dorothy Spencer to the Board of Social Services.

The Tyrrell native received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Elizabeth City State University and her teaching certificate from East Carolina University.

She was a Children’s Services social worker in the Tyrrell County Department of Social Services for 18 years, and later retired from Tyrrell County Schools.

Spencer joins Carol Davis, Ernestine Hassell, Clydette Overton and Carl Willis (chairman) on the county social services board.

The board meets at 9 a.m. on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the DSS conference room at 102 North Road Street, Columbia. Meetings are open to the public.

Brandy B. Mann is the county’s director of social services, having been appointed to that office last January after more than three years as interim director.
