Boating accident leaves one dead near Belhaven

BELHAVEN — A boating accident on a private pond near Belhaven left one man dead on Friday morning.

According to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Beaufort County Communications received a report of an overturned boat on a private pond east of Belhaven on U.S. Highway 264.

BCSO deputies and EMS personnel dispatched to the scene found the 57-year old victim, Darrell Alvin Layne, unresponsive on the bank of the pond. According to the release, Layne and his 67-year-old fishing partner, both of Hyde County, were on the water fishing when the boat overturned.

According to BCSO Lt. Jim Vanlandingham, the second man attempted lifesaving efforts, but was unsuccessful. Having lost his cell phone when the boat capsized, the man had to leave the scene to seek help from a nearby household.

Deputies learned that the second man had pulled Layne out of the water after the accident. Lifesaving efforts by EMS personnel to were unsuccessful as well. According to the release, the accident is still under investigation, and there is no indication of foul play at this time.
