Washington TDA to host photo contest

A camera and an eye for the interesting, beautiful and unique is all one needs to have a shot at recognition — and some cold, hard cash — this month in Washington, as the Washington Tourism Development Authority hosts its inaugural photography contest.

The TDA is looking for a variety of pictures of different subjects, people and places that embody Washington, all of which may be utilized by the organization in its efforts to market the city.

“It’s a chance for them (Washington residents and visitors) to showcase their photo skills and to show Washington through their lenses,” WTDA Director Ruyle said. “I’m hoping from this contest we can gain some photography we can use for our marketing purposes.”

While Ruyle considered hiring a professional photographer to try and capture the essence of the city, instead, she decided that a photo contest would be a way to engage Washington residents in telling the city’s story.

“Photography is one of the needs I identified when starting this job,” Ruyle said. “Having up-to-date, current photos of Washington, its residents and its visitors is really important to being able to tell our story.”

Suggested categories include nature and the outdoors, culture, shopping, food and drink, festivals and events, history, kids and families and diversity.

With cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place, each ranking contestant will also have their photos featured on the WTDA website, social media accounts and e-newsletters.

Entries for the contest are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 19. The contest is open to photographers ages 18 and older, and those under 18 must have a parent or guardian submit their entry on their behalf. All photos must be taken in Washington.

Each entrant may submit up to 10 photos.

Official contest rules and a link to submit entries can be found at www.littlewashingtonnc.com/2018-photo-contest. Entries can also be submitted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by tagging @onthepamlico and adding the hashtag #PictureWashNC,
