From The Salvation Army of Washington
The Salvation Army of Washington has served Beaufort, Bertie, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties since 1939. Over the last few months the Advisory Board members and Corps Officers have discussed how to better serve all six Counties with the resources entrusted to the Army. Through much prayer and discussion, it was decided that the Army would extend its social service presence in Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties by way of a partnership with the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene.
“To better be able to serve Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties by offering social services to the residents of these Counties closer to where they live, we feel that we will be able to have a greater impact than in recent years,” said Lieutenant Karl Bush, Corps Officer with The Salvation Army of Washington. “Many clients have told us that they have transportation issues. When a client needs rent or utility assistance due to lack of funding, it is very difficult to ask them to travel to Washington, especially as some areas are more than an hour away.”
In 2017 The Salvation Army served 409 individuals in Hyde County, 149 individuals in Tyrrell County, and 365 individuals in Washington County with rent, utility, and food assistance. It is expected that the amount of families served will increase, as The Salvation Army will be more accessible in this area.
The Plymouth Church of The Nazarene has offered an office space for the Salvation Army social worker once a week at no cost to The Salvation Army.
“We feel that The Salvation Army has a very impactful mission and is able to provide much needed assistance to our communities; we are blessed to be able to partner with The Salvation Army of Washington Command and ‘meet human needs without discrimination,’ as part of the Army’s Mission Statement declares,” said Pastor Steve Creech, Pastor of the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene.
Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 25, The Salvation Army will be at the Plymouth Church of The Nazarene every Thursday, from 9 a.m. to noon, for residents of Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties to apply for rent, utility, and food assistance. Clients will be seen as scheduled by appointment by calling (252) 946-2523.
