A storage building east of Columbia, owned by Jose Francisco Rivera, was a total loss, along with four vehicles inside the wood frame structure, following a fire on Nov. 19.

The Regional 911 Center received a call at 2:06 p.m., about a structure fire at 1744 U.S. 64 just east of Columbia, reported Tyrrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman.

The sheriff, who was the first responder on the scene, observed smoke coming from the east end of a storage building behind the residence and summoned aid.

Tyrrell Volunteer Fire Department, as well as firefighters from Creswell and Roper, plus Washington-Tyrrell EMS, and the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Crews were on scene for over four hours, the sheriff stated. At one point both lanes of U.S. 64 were closed. One lane eventually opened to traffic that was directed by members of the Sheriff’s Office.

There were no injuries.

The Columbia Fire Marshal was contacted to conduct an investigation.
