No injuries or damage were reported to the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office as a result of a tornado warning from the National Weather Service at 7:26 p.m., Dec. 20, for Hyde, Tyrrell and Dare counties, a sheriff’s spokeswoman stated.

A line of thunderstorms along the leading edge of a low pressure area drenched the southeastern states Thursday as it moved northeastward toward the Atlantic Ocean. And temperatures in the mid-60s contributed to unstable air aloft sufficient to spawn tornadoes.

The alert prompted WITN and WNCT to preempt regular television programming, and their weathermen provided continuous detailed coverage of a thunderstorm with possible tornado winds as it moved northward at about 45 miles an hour from Lake Landing in Hyde County down the west bank of Alligator River past Gum Neck, over Frying Pan and Alligator in Tyrrell County and then across Albemarle Sound toward Camden and Currituck counties, losing intensity as it went.

The warning was lifted at 8:15 p.m.
