The Edenton License Plate Agency office, located at 810 N. Broad St., was closed indefinitely Feb. 8 following the death of the agency’s contractor, stated John Brockwell of the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.

Jeannette Dowd had been the licensed contractor for the agency since April 1973 until her death Feb. 8.

DMV may award a temporary contract in the coming weeks to keep the agency operating in Chowan County.

LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, 125 license plate agencies operate across North Carolina.

The closure of the license plate agency will not affect operations of the driver’s license examiner’s office in Edenton.
