Representatives of the Tyrrellinean Club on May 6 received authorization from the Columbia Board of Aldermen to erect a clock on the Town Common in front of the Municipal Building.
Elaine Jones, Joanne Smith and Janet Walker, members of the club’s Clock Committee, displayed images of the 24-inch-diameter clock mounted on a 10-foot-high pedestal. Inscribed bricks will complete the foundation and surroundings. The clock’s two faces will be visible from the boardwalk and Main Street.
Encircling each face will be the inscription: “Town of Columbia, established 1793.”
Jones said the club has $2,000 set aside, and members intend to begin at once to sell bricks and solicit donations to pay for the $15,000 project.
The lighted electric clock will be reset automatically after a power outage, “so Rhett won’t have to go out there with a step ladder and his Timex,” Mayor James Cahoon quipped.
On motion by Alderman Hal Fleming, the board unanimously accepted the Tyrrellineans’ proposal.
Jones said later that Mary Lou Everett is also a Clock Committee member, and each of the women can furnish more information about the clock and its installation.
