Dragonflies on Alligator River

Published 2:12 pm Monday, July 22, 2019

Dragonflies are beautiful and amazing little flying creatures. They begin life in water. There as eggs they hatch into little efficient eating machines and live in water for 1-3 years. They feed on small fish, tadpoles and various insect larvae (including mosquitoes). In turn the dragonfly is a food source for birds, frogs, fish & lizards. Once they mature and leave the water they can fly up to speeds of 35 mph! You’ll find dragonflies on all of our regional national wildlife refuges.
