The 24th annual reunion of the Christopher Cason (Kit) and Mary Ben Brooks Spencer family was held recently at the Engelhard Baptist Church with 33 descendants and friends in attendance including Mary Spencer Tilghman and R. S. Spencer, Jr. the only two grandchildren of Kit and Mary Ben still living.
Donna Credle opened the meeting with some brief comments about the family and then asked Rev. C. L. Reynolds, church pastor, to pronounce the blessing for the day and food.
Afterward. lines formed at the bountiful food counter which held fried shrimp, fried chicken, barbecue and many salads and vegetables available with desserts in a nearby room. A pone bread made by Mary Spencer Tilghman caught the attention of devotees of that food which is always present at the reunions.
Donna then recognized descendants of the five adult children of Kit by groups with the R. S. Spencer (Tony) Spencer descendants being the most numerous.
Afterward, family historian R. S. Spencer, Jr. discussed Kit in his youth after the loss of his mother when he was 6 and provided some details of Kit’s service in the Civil War when he was a member of Company F, 33rd Regiment of North Carolina troops and was involved in several major battles of the war.
Alice Cox Croom assisted by Jennifer Thomas held the drawings for the door prizes. Following this after a brief period of reflections, the reunion ended with comments about next year’s 25th reunion.
