It’s time to brush off those sneakers and hit the courts for some jump shot practice, as the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce will host Hoops on the Pamlico, its first 3-on-3 basketball tournament, on Oct. 5.

The tournament is slated to be held starting at 9 a.m. on Stewart Parkway, and will be open to teams ranging from nine and older through adults. The deadline for teams to register is Sept. 20.

“We just wanted to come up with some more fun community activities to get more people downtown,” said Chamber Assistant Director Robin McKeithan. “We have such a beautiful parkway and were kind of thinking outside of the box and thought a basketball tournament would be fun.”

Age brackets for the tournament vary widely, with the youngest being for ages nine and 10 and the oldest being for ages 40 and older. Teams can have as many as eight players, although only three will play at a time.

“We want anyone that wants to be included to be included,” McKeithan said.

On the day of the tournament, players will compete in the round-robin style tournament on courts set up along Stewart Parkway. In the event of rain, the games will be moved to the Bobby Andrews Recreation Center for kids and teens and to Fitness Unlimited for adults. Whoever wins the most games or scores the most points will be crowned the winner for their age bracket.

Registration for Hoops on the Pamlico is $5 per player. There is a limit of four teams per age bracket, with teams being registered on a first come, first served basis. Those who register by Sept. 20 will receive a T-shirt.

“We hope to make this a yearly event, so we want this first one to be successful,” McKeithan said. “We think it can always grow in the future to where we can have more teams in each age group. We’re excited.”
