There’s still time

Over the course of the day on Tuesday, more than 10,000 volunteers fanned out across the country with one simple mission — registering their fellow citizens to vote.

Sept. 24 marked National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan effort to ensure prospective voters don’t miss a registration deadline, have up-to-date registrations and the tools necessary to register. In 2018, that concentrated effort ensured that 800,000 voters were properly registered to vote on Election Day.

While the numbers are still out from this year, there’s still time to register and vote in the 2019 municipal elections, and it’s never been easier.

To vote on Election Day, the deadline to register in North Carolina is 25 days before the election. That means for the upcoming election, registration must be completed by Oct. 11.

Even easier, One Stop voting offers an easy opportunity to register and vote the same day at the Beaufort County Board of Elections. To register, during that period, one must present a North Carolina Driver’s license or government issued ID, a copy of a utility bill, bank statement or pay check that verifies one’s name and address. It’s all a pretty simple process.

Whether you live in the city limits and are eligible to vote in the municipal elections, or are in an unincorporated area, now’s a good time to check on your registration and make any necessary changes.

A good place to start is the Beaufort County Board of Elections website. A quick visit to beaufortncboe.org allows one to check registration status and provides a wealth of information about local elections.

For those who want to vote in the upcoming municipal elections, there’s still time to register. For everyone else, take a moment and make sure your registration is up to date. It’s the best way possible to ensure you have a voice in civic affairs and the elections that influence our society from the White House and Congress down to the town hall.
