Hunters can help change lives

To the Editor:
North Carolina deer hunters have a unique opportunity this fall to make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors. North Carolina Hunters for the Hungry, or NCHFTH, makes this easy to do. For thousands of local families trying to make ends meet, and tens of thousands of neighbors struggling with chronic health issues, every bite counts. One deer returns, on average, enough all-natural high-quality protein to serve 160 meals, and venison is lower in fat and calories than most commercially prepared ground beef. In 2018, deer donated through this program provided enough meat for more than 160,000 meals — at no charge to needy families — and at a program cost of less than $0.38 per serving.
The process is simple. Hunters harvest deer and deliver them to either a local N.C. Wildlife Federation donation site or directly to a participating NCHFTH processor. Venison burger is then distributed at no charge through community-based food distribution networks. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, North Carolina Hunters for the Hungry, Inc. relies on local, tax-deductible financial donations to reimburse meat processors for production of the venison burger.
To donate a deer, please find a participating drop-off site near you online at nchuntersforthehungry.org/Processors.html. Financial contributions can be made online at nchuntersforthehungry.org/Donate.html using PayPal, or by mail: NC Hunters for the Hungry, Inc., P.O. Box 99108 Raleigh NC 27624.
