Monna Lou C. Hopkins

Monna Lou Carawan Hopkins, 82, of Swan Quarter, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at Cross Creek Health Care Center.
Born in Hyde County, Dec. 16, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Milton O. and Rosa Lee Overton Carawan. She was married to A. Grey Hopkins, Sr., who survives.
She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, treasurer and became the first woman to hold the position of Elder at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Monna Lou devoted her life to her church and family and worked as a bookkeeper for Swan Quarter Equipment. She had a unique ability for details. She loved gardening, growing flowers, and she was known for her good cooking. Often, she served others with her humble spirit through the Home Extension Club, Meals on Wheels, Presbyterian Women, SHIP Volunteer and numerous other community activities.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, at Calvary Presbyterian Church. Rev. Spottswood Graves will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Soule Cemetery.
Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Susan H. Johnson and husband Nelson, of Raleigh; a son, Alston Grey Hopkins, Jr. of Rochelle, Illinois; three grandchildren, Brian Johnson, Sarah K. Johnson and Wesley M. Hopkins; a sister, Roseanna C. Swindler and husband Bob, of Gastonia; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends during the hour prior to the funeral beginning at 1 p.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
